$100 a barrel is the number that moved every desk on September 10. Brent cleared it for the first time in six weeks after the US destroyed five Iranian oil tankers near Kharg Island; Iran fired back at US warships and shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. WTI is up 5.5% over three sessions; the OVX oil-volatility index has climbed toward 50. Traders are watching $99 as resistance, $86 as support if the shooting stops.

The Dow fell 405 points on September 9, its third straight losing session; oil and a rising 10-year yield pressured stocks, and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq fell with it. The Nasdaq 100 is testing support at 29,000-29,200; a break lower turns this into a deeper correction. The US Treasury announced a $6 billion bond-buyback plan to ease borrowing costs. Yields rose anyway. One Bloomberg trader put it plainly: the move was "intended to be shock and awe" and came out "shock and stocks are dropping." Markets now sit ahead of Friday's US CPI print and the Fed's September 15-16 meeting; rate-hike bets are building on top of oil-driven inflation risk.

Energy is the one place making money on the chaos. Marathon Petroleum has surged nearly 59% over 12 weeks riding the crude rally and is flagged as a top "Strong Buy" alongside Dell Technologies and BILL Holdings. Growth and tech names are lagging as yields and energy costs rise; market breadth stays narrow.

Bitcoin is holding $78,000-$79,500, down 0.7-1% in 24 hours; call it a pause in its 22.8% 30-day advance, not a reversal. The Crypto Fear and Greed Index still reads 70, "Greed." Bitcoin is outperforming gold in what one analyst called an "anti-fiat" rotation, with a golden cross pattern intact. Polymarket odds split 51-53% in favor of modest upside into Friday's inflation data.

EUR/USD sits at 1.1650, a one-and-a-half-week high, with markets fully pricing a 25 basis-point ECB hike to 2.5% on Thursday. A dark cloud cover pattern flags a possible near-term pullback toward 1.1537-1.15; the broader bias still points to 1.18 further out.

Corporate news split two ways. Apple staged its biggest launch of the year under new CEO John Ternus, unveiling a foldable "iPhone Duo" starting at $1,999 and rising to roughly $3,200 for the top storage tier; reviewers praised the crease-free hinge even as Samsung mocked Apple for "reheating our leftovers."

LIV Golf filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund pulled its backing four years and roughly $5 billion into the venture; court filings show the league owes Jon Rahm over $7.4 million, Bryson DeChambeau roughly $5.7 million and Dustin Johnson more than $5 million, with Rory McIlroy predicting an exodus of players now free of their contracts.

The Big Story

Five ships and one warning shot reset the Middle East on September 10. CENTCOM said US forces destroyed five Iranian crude tankers near Kharg Island and the Gulf of Oman after the IRGC twice targeted a US Navy warship with ballistic missiles in two days; the warship evaded both attempts and no American was hurt. Iran hit back with roughly 20 ballistic missiles aimed at a US-used base in Jordan. Jordan's military intercepted 18; two landed in open ground; nobody was hurt there either. Iran separately claimed it struck two US Navy destroyers and eight tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM called that "completely false," saying no US warship was hit and every IRGC attack failed.

The Strait itself is now the chokepoint of the war. The IRGC declared an expanded "sanctions route" restricted zone running from Chabahar through the Gulf of Oman, warning that any vessel entering without coordination would be treated as a target; it separately told tankers near Kuwait and Bahrain to evacuate immediately. Shipping traffic through the Strait has fallen roughly 90% since the standoff began; Al Jazeera counted 42 tankers backed up waiting to transit. Roughly 7 million barrels a day of Middle East oil production sits shut in behind the US blockade. Secretary of State Marco Rubio's message to Tehran was blunt: for every attempt to hit a US ship, Iran will keep "losing tankers." The phrase making the rounds is "economic strangulation," and the numbers back it up. Iran's currency is weakening, fish catches at Bandar Abbas have collapsed, and the IMF now projects the Iranian economy will shrink more than 5% this year.

The war is also spilling sideways. The Houthis launched their heaviest attack on Saudi Arabia in years, hitting Aramco facilities, King Khaled airbase and energy sites in Najran and Jazan and wounding more than 70 people; Saudi-backed forces answered with more than 30 airstrikes across four Yemeni provinces. The UN says nearly 900 people have been killed and 21,000 displaced in Yemen since an earlier truce collapsed, and warns the country risks sliding back into full-scale war. The timing looks like no accident: the Houthi escalation appears coordinated with Iran's IRGC, opening a second front toward the Bab al-Mandeb Strait to strengthen Tehran's hand in the wider standoff with Washington.

Outside the region, the war shows up at the pump. US gas prices hit roughly $4.22 a gallon nationally; diesel hit a record near $6 a gallon amid a global refining-capacity shortage, the largest one-day jump in gas prices since May. Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey told the Treasury Select Committee that inflation risks are now "on the upside," pointing directly at oil and commodity prices tied to the war; UK gas and commodity indices have hit all-time highs. Diplomacy through Qatar, Oman and China continues without a breakthrough. Trump told reporters the war would likely "end immediately after the election," accusing Iran of trying to hold out for a weaker US negotiating partner after the midterms. That claim puts the war's endpoint on the same calendar as the gas-price pain driving his party's anxiety.

US Politics

Republicans opened "Trumpapalooza," the first-ever midterm-year national convention held by any party, at Dallas's American Airlines Center, and the mood inside did not match the branding. A new NBC poll put Trump's approval at 36%, with 64% disapproving, the lowest of his term, and it shaped everything else at the event. Senators Susan Collins and Dan Sullivan and New Hampshire's John Sununu, all in competitive races, skipped the convention rather than be seen next to him. Sky's Mark Stone noted a striking absence of red MAGA hats in a crowd of otherwise enthusiastic Trump supporters.

Trump's own speech leaned into scale rather than caution. He promised a $5,000 "Trump dividend" to every adult if Republicans hold Congress, touted a new deal for 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan oil reserves he said could supply "500 years" of use, and floated renaming Lake Ontario "Lake America," New Mexico "New America" and the Strait of Hormuz the "Trump Strait."

He called Ken Paxton "the single greatest Attorney General" in Texas history and directed his super PAC to commit $10 million to Paxton's Senate campaign against James Talarico, a race Cook Political Report has moved into genuine toss-up territory; Ted Cruz suggested it alone could become a $200 million contest. Trump branded Democratic candidates "communists," citing an alleged party manifesto to abolish police, ICE, prisons and the Supreme Court.

Gas and diesel prices are driving the political story too. Bloomberg's Kate Ackley points to Democrats seizing on the gap between Republican promises to lower prices and the reality at the pump, weeks before voters decide the midterms. An emergency slide accidentally deployed on the Qatari-donated Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews, delaying Trump's departure by roughly 25-30 minutes; he dismissed the safety concern to reporters. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker led a Democratic counter-press-conference in Dallas, calling the convention "bizarre" and citing a coordinated ground campaign of 13 million phone calls and more than a million doors knocked. Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman appeared by video praising Trump and Republican Senator Dave McCormick, reviving speculation about a party break.

Down the ballot, two results landed hard. Helena Foulkes, a former CVS executive, beat incumbent Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee in a landslide primary, the first sitting RI governor to lose renomination in decades; NBC's Steve Kornacki tied the loss to prolonged, controversial repairs on the Washington Bridge.

In New Hampshire, Chris Pappas won the Democratic Senate primary by roughly 2-to-1 over a democratic-socialist-aligned challenger, and Trump-endorsed John Sununu beat former Senator Scott Brown for the Republican nomination; the two now compete for retiring Senator Jeanne Shaheen's seat in a contest both parties see as central to Senate control. Missouri's redistricting fight has produced dueling court orders: the state supreme court blocked the Republican-redrawn map, a federal judge separately ordered that same map used in November, and the US Supreme Court left the state block in place, leaving Secretary of State Denny Hoskins facing a possible contempt hearing weeks before the election.

World

Israel and the UK are in open diplomatic rupture. After the UK, France and Canada banned trade with Israeli West Bank settlements over what Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband called "ethnic cleansing," Israel announced it will close its British consulate in occupied East Jerusalem within 30 days, expel UK Gaza-coordination staff and bar 11-12 British figures from entry, including former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. Netanyahu's spokesperson warned any government acting against Israel would "lose influence and relevance in the region." Miliband rejected the UK's Chief Rabbi's warning that the sanctions endanger British Jews as itself antisemitic. The US response was muted: Rubio declined substantive comment, and US Ambassador Mike Huckabee warned only of a "very negative effect" on UK-Israel relations.

Gaza's ceasefire is fraying in practice even as it holds on paper. Israeli warplanes bombed homes in Al-Shati, Al-Nuseirat and Khan Younis, destroying residential blocks after evacuation warnings that gave families only minutes to flee; at least nine people were hurt.

In southern Lebanon, funerals were held in Kefr Ruman for nine people, including two children, killed in Israeli strikes despite a June ceasefire there too, while Nabatieh residents described near-daily fear and fresh displacement. Separately, Haaretz reported that Netanyahu received a 45minute personal warning call from the UAE's president about a planned Hamas attack roughly ten days before October 7, 2023, and failed to relay it to his own security chiefs; Netanyahu called the story defamatory and plans to sue, while the UAE's careful non-denial did little to quiet it.

Natural disaster took two very different tolls this week. Nepal's flash-flood crisis, triggered by an August 26 Himalayan glacier collapse, has killed roughly 1,400 people by local reporting, with around 5,800 still missing (a UN briefing put confirmed deaths at 67 with 5,132 missing, a gap reflecting confirmed-versus-estimated counts); the UN's $49.6 million flash appeal is only 44% funded, and roughly 70 Americans remain unaccounted for near the Nepal-China border.

Hurricane Lowell, downgraded to a tropical storm, delivered Hawaii's strongest hit in over 30 years, battering Kauai with 85-90mph winds, killing at least one person and knocking out power to more than 90% of the island; Hawaii's governor deployed over 300 National Guard troops and closed schools statewide for the week.

Sudan's war economy is collapsing outright. The pound has lost more than 90% of its value since fighting began in 2023, falling from roughly 620 to the dollar to about 71,000 now, wiping out entire monthly salaries on a handful of purchases.

In the DRC, Ebola has killed more than 3,000 people and infected over 6,000, the secondlargest and fastest-moving outbreak on record, prompting health officials to track cellphone mobility data to predict where it spreads next. In Germany, Chancellor Friedrich Merz and AfD co-leader Alice Weidel clashed bitterly in the Bundestag days after the AfD's near-44% win in Saxony-Anhalt put the far-right party on the verge of governing a German state for the first time; DW's own political editor called the exchange a draw that nonetheless left Weidel the political winner.

New Today

Disasters

Nepal's death toll and Hawaii's hurricane cleanup (above) both continued; a magnitude-5.2 glacier collapse in Langtang sent debris more than 14km and destroyed a China-Nepal border crossing before flooding the Trishuli River over 100km.

Crime and justice

the Miami Amazon cargo plane crash that killed five ground workers produced new NTSB flight data showing the Boeing 767 touched down at 158 knots with no indication speed brakes or thrust reversers deployed before it overran the runway at 65 knots; a victim's widow has sued Amazon and operator 21 Air.

LSU backed down in its roster fight with the SEC, filling its team with different players rather than the two former NFL players it had fought to add, ending a dispute the conference had called unprecedented in its history. Thieves stole an estimated $10 million in Renoir paintings from a French Riviera museum in under five minutes, cutting through a fence and frame mounts before dropping two canvases in their escape; French officials linked it to a wider wave of European museum crime following last year's Louvre jewel heist.

A DOJ crackdown on the Chinarun "Shinbee" scam network seized nearly $1 billion for victims, took down more than 500 scam sites and led to roughly 500 arrests in Madagascar; the FBI logged over $20.8 billion in fraud losses reported in 2025 alone.

Business and tech

Jacob Coxon, a researcher who spent three years on pretraining work at both OpenAI and Anthropic, resigned warning "neither company is acting responsibly" and that they are racing toward self-improving superintelligence; Anthropic's own alignment science lead Evan Hubinger publicly agreed, putting the odds of AI killing everyone within a decade above 10%, and CEO Dario Amodei has separately estimated 10-25% odds of catastrophic outcomes. A technical fault at NATS's Swanwick site produced a third straight day of UK flight chaos, grounding or delaying more than 2,000 flights and affecting over 300,000 passengers, the third major NATS outage since 2023; Ryanair's COO called for CEO Martin Rolfe's resignation over the lack of a backup system.
