$84,000 is where Bitcoin sits after a wild week; it surged from below $75,000 to above $87,300 in six sessions, then reversed hard as a stronger-than-expected September PMI print sent Treasury yields sharply higher. The 10year yield spiked to 5.058%, its highest level since 2007, reviving bets on another Fed hike. The Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq all sold off, down 0.7%, 0.8% and 1.1% respectively; small caps took the worst of it, with the Russell 2000 down 1.03%. A roughly $14-15 billion Bitcoin options expiry lands Friday, adding to the volatility. Institutional demand held up anyway: BlackRock's IBIT ETF pulled in about $1 billion in inflows even as Bitcoin pulled back. Bitcoin needs only to close above its $87,498 year-open level by December 31 to finish 2026 positive; it is currently down just 1.2% on the year. Capital rotated hard into altcoins. Bitcoin Cash jumped 28% to near $349 after CME Group said it will list Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap futures from October 19; Zcash and XRP gained too.

Oil eased. WTI slipped to about $91.50 and Brent to near $102, a sixth straight losing session and the longest such streak in over a year, after Iran signaled openness to talks with the US and Saudi Arabia moved to restart its East-West pipeline, which has 7 million barrels a day of capacity. A surprise API inventory build added pressure. Goldman Sachs still flags upside risk to $120 a barrel if Middle East attacks resume. At the pump the relief has not arrived. US diesel sits at a record $6.50 a gallon, up 83% this year; regular gas averages $4.47. Trump is weighing a diesel export ban over objections from his own energy secretary and the American Petroleum Institute, which warns a ban would push gasoline prices higher even as it cools diesel.

The dollar stayed firm. EUR/USD fell to 1.14, a two-month low, despite stronger Eurozone PMI data, as markets now price a 53% chance of an October Fed hike. The pair trades below its 50, 100 and 200-day moving averages, with support eyed near 1.1300 to 1.1350. Meta was the standout equity story: shares are up more than 30% month-to-date after Mark Zuckerberg unveiled "Muse," a personal AI agent that became the Apple App Store's top free app for five straight days. JPMorgan called it the most widely used consumer AI application since ChatGPT. Muse's new grocery-ordering feature, built with a retail partner, is rattling subscription-dependent stocks such as Planet Fitness; the fear is that an AI agent able to price-compare and cancel subscriptions in one prompt threatens banks, insurers and gyms alike. Shopify is partnering with Muse. Amazon is reportedly holding back, wary Meta could mine the data to build a rival model. The same AI story lifted chipmakers including Nvidia, AMD, Micron and Sandisk. McDonald's unveiled an $8.5 billion, multi-year plan built around AI drive-thru ordering to win back customers squeezed by what the company calls the "K-shaped economy."

The Big Story

Xi Jinping landed at Joint Base Andrews for his first US state visit in roughly 11 years; Trump broke protocol to greet him personally on the tarmac, red carpet included, ahead of a Thursday state dinner. The fragile US-China trade truce, due to lapse in November, got extended to around January 10: some tariffs ease in exchange for loosened rare-earth export restrictions, a trade that matters because bilateral trade fell nearly 30% in 2025 under duties as high as 50%. Xi arrived without the retinue of Chinese tech executives who accompanied his 2015 visit. Trump, by contrast, is set to host Jensen Huang, Tim Cook, Sam Altman and Satya Nadella at the dinner. On the table: AI and semiconductor export controls, rare earths, and Taiwan, where a pending $14 billion US arms package is the likely flashpoint; China's ambassador has called Taiwan and human rights "red lines." This is a tactical thaw, not a strategic reset; the best realistic outcome is a modest reciprocal tariff cut on up to $30 billion of goods. Some Republicans, Sen. Roger Wicker among them, object to the lavish welcome given reports that China supplied Iran with satellite intelligence used against US forces, and given a fresh Pentagon disclosure that China has held diverted F-35 stealth-jet parts since May.

Hours after greeting Xi, Trump took the UN podium to deliver an ultimatum on Iran. Iran, he said, faces a choice: a deal that lets it "rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever was before," or annihilation of the Islamic Republic, "never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again." He added that any deal would likely wait until after the US midterms. Iran's Pezeshkian answered in kind, displaying photos of children he said were killed by US and Israeli weapons and declaring "we will never bow our head or bend at the knee." The sole US diplomat in the chamber walked out mid-speech. Yet the same day, envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held a multi-hour, Qatar-mediated meeting with Iranian representatives in New York, the first direct contact since June. Iran's IRGC dismissed the annihilation threat as "strategic desperation" while warning of crushing retaliation if fighting resumes; Tehran's demands are unchanged: reopen the Strait of Hormuz, lift the US naval blockade, unfreeze assets. The war has gutted Iran's economy: inflation near 65%, food prices up 128%, the currency collapsed. Tehran puts total war damage at $270 billion; the IMF projects a 5.4% contraction this year.

The two threads meet in the oil market and in Washington's own politics. Brent's sixth straight down session reflects genuine relief that Trump called the Witkoff-Kushner talks "very good," even as he repeated the annihilation line hours later; traders have learned to discount the contradiction rather than chase it. At home, the war's unpopularity is its own liability now: a new CNN poll puts Trump's approval at a record 33% across both terms, with only 36% of Americans believing the US is winning the Iran war at all.

Trump's UN week had a third thread: AI. Sam Altman and Anthropic's Dario Amodei briefed the UN Security Council on AI risks, from loss-of-control scenarios to power concentration in a handful of labs; Altman told the council that even a 0.1% catastrophe risk is unacceptable. Trump answered from the same podium by rejecting the premise outright, saying the US "totally rejects any attempt to construct a global scheme to control artificial intelligence," floating a rename to "superintelligence," and casting AI development as a race the US must win against China. Sen. Mark Kelly introduced the "Make AI Work for Americans Act," a proposed levy on AI and digital-ad companies to fund displaced workers; he accused the White House of lobbying against regulation while Trump dismisses AI-safety fears as a "hoax." Anthropic and OpenAI both cut prices the same week, Claude Opus 5.5 roughly 40% cheaper and OpenAI's new Sol and Luna models up to 50% cheaper, as competition with China's DeepSeek intensifies. China opened a data-security probe into DeepSeek and Moonshot after Anthropic alleged both routed sensitive user data through Claude, knocking Alibaba and Tencent shares just as the summit began.

Trump's UN week is colliding with a press-freedom fight at home. Federal judge Timothy Kelly, who ruled for CNN's Jim Acosta in 2018, heard emergency arguments on a lawsuit by CNN, MS Now and Politico to restore White House access after Trump banned all three. A late-night DOJ filing shifted the administration's rationale from Trump's stated complaint about "unfavorable coverage" to a national-security claim tied to reporting on the White House ballroom construction, arguing access is "a privilege, not a right." CNN's Elie Honig called out what he termed a new "post-deprivation process" defense: deprive access first, offer a hearing later. The White House rebranded an old YouTube livestream as "Trump TV," pulling roughly 1,000 to 5,000 viewers for reruns of speeches; critics including California Gov. Gavin Newsom compared it to state media. Even Republican Rep. Don Bacon called the ban an unnecessary distraction from priorities like diesel prices and predicted it will lose in court and backfire politically. Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended it anyway, saying the president should not have to work alongside reporters he believes cover him dishonestly. Every broadcast network, Fox included, declined pool coverage of Xi's arrival in solidarity with the banned outlets. Melania Trump's office separately approved CNN and Politico credentials for a UN sideline event, a crack in the administration's united front.

The 33% approval number is starting to move Republican behavior. Iowa Senate candidate Ashley Hinson broke with the White House to criticize the Iran war's effect on gas and diesel prices, language echoed by Michigan's Mike Rogers and Ohio's John Husted, all running in swing states where the same CNN poll shows Democrats holding an eight-point edge on the generic ballot. CNN panelists drew a direct line to 2006, when George W. Bush's 38% approval on the Iraq War preceded a Republican wipeout in both chambers; Trump's Iran numbers are worse. A parallel corruption story is adding to the pressure. Republican Sen. John Curtis called on the Judiciary Committee to investigate and potentially subpoena Donald Trump Jr. over reports that Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev paid for parts of his Bahamas wedding. A separate CNN investigation found Trump Jr.'s net worth jumped from roughly $50 million around the 2024 election to about $300 million a year later, driven by crypto and licensing deals including one tied to Abu Dhabi's deputy ruler. In Maine, ProPublica reported the FBI opened and later dropped a probe into Sen. Susan Collins over an alleged contracts-for-donations scheme with a Hawaiian defense contractor who gave detailed confessions to agents in 2022 and 2024. Collins's office calls the underlying allegations "categorically false"; Collins herself is leaning on constituent goodwill and tariff exemptions rather than national polling showing two-thirds of Maine voters disapprove of Trump. In Michigan, Kamala Harris campaigned in Detroit for Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed against Republican Mike Rogers, repeatedly declining to rule out a 2028 run while insisting the midterms come first. In Texas, Senate Majority Leader John Thune says he is "highly confident" of holding the seat behind more than $100 million spent for Ken Paxton against Democrat James Talarico, even as CNN groups Texas among the battlegrounds where the corruption story could erode traditionally safe Republican margins.

Ukraine's diplomacy moved faster than its battlefield rhetoric let on. Marco Rubio confirmed Vladimir Putin has been invited to December's G20 summit in Miami. Zelensky told the UN General Assembly he is "ready" for trilateral talks with Putin and Trump, offering to halt Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure if Russia reciprocates. Rubio said after meeting Russia's Lavrov that both sides had "expressed interest" in a limited grain-and-energy ceasefire, short of ending the war. On the ground, Russia kept striking anyway: fresh drone attacks on Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia killed at least two and injured about 25, hitting fuel stations, a residential building and a warehouse. Quietly, Ukraine's Third Army Corps has retaken more than 100 square kilometers near the Liman salient over a four-month operation it deliberately kept unannounced to avoid tipping off Russian forces, easing pressure on Pokrovsk, Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. Russia's defense ministry claims over 5,300 square kilometers and 220 settlements taken this year. Europe's support is fraying at the edges: the EU agreed to lift sanctions on Russian businessmen Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman as part of a deal extending thousands of other sanctions to 2029, a move Ukraine called "unjustifiable and a humiliation." The EU separately pressed Kyiv to curb its shadow economy before releasing more funding. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz skipped the UN General Assembly entirely, under domestic pressure from a right wing opposed to further Ukraine funding.

Gaza's ceasefire is holding on paper only. Israeli drone strikes killed multiple Palestinians in Gaza City, Khan Younis and near displacement camps despite the truce. Al Jazeera puts the toll at nearly 1,400 Palestinians killed since October; Israel says one strike killed Hamas finance chief Mohammad Abu al-Alwan. The US-led Board of Peace unveiled a six-month, roughly $2.4-2.5 billion reconstruction plan covering 66 projects, starting with water, sanitation and rubble removal, while conceding Israel still occupies about 70% of Gaza and full recovery could take a decade and $70 billion. Former Human Rights Watch head Kenneth Roth called the plan "completely divorced from reality," noting Israel has expanded its footprint and Hamas will not disarm under attack. In southern Lebanon, Israel kept demolishing homes and schools across more than 60 occupied villages; the UN reported new fortified Israeli positions inside Lebanese territory. The same day, bulldozers razed Palestinian homes and stables in Masafer Yatta and the West Bank village of Abba.

Germany's regional elections landed as a genuine shock. The CDU called its Mecklenburg-Vorpommern result a "disaster" after the AfD surged past 38% there and the far-left Linke topped the vote in Berlin, squeezing Chancellor Merz's party from both flanks in the former East. In Ethiopia, the Tigray People's Liberation Front seized the airport in Mekelle and declared its 2022 peace deal with Addis Ababa dead, with fighting spilling into Afar and Amhara. This week it formed an "Alliance for Survival" with six other armed groups, including the Oromo Liberation Army, aiming to remove Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government. One panelist called the region "very, very close" to full-scale war; others see the alliance as more rhetoric than unified military force. Nearly 16 million Moroccans voted in parliamentary elections dominated by jobs and cost-of-living concerns amid deep youth disillusionment. The US, Denmark and Greenland signed a security pact expanding American bases on the Arctic island while preserving Danish sovereignty. Trump pledged two new major US military bases and an expanded space base, with Greenland required to stay in NATO if it ever becomes independent, capping months of tension after his earlier annexation push.

UK PM Andy Burnham made his UN debut, met Trump for the first time, and announced a UK-US AI defence partnership, even as Trump called the UK's Chagos Islands handover a "terrible deal" to his face. Argentina's Javier Milei used his UN address to renew Argentina's sovereignty claim over the Falkland Islands; Burnham said Britain will "stand firm." Six people were arrested after anti-migration protesters confronted a Channel migrant boat landing at Gosport, England; one activist was filmed appearing to slash the dinghy while a rescue worker was still aboard. Two RAF pilots ejected safely before their Hawk training jet crashed and exploded near Anglesey, Wales, pausing Hawk and Red Arrows flights. Two University of Mississippi students died in separate incidents the same weekend, with packaged kratom found at both scenes; officials also flagged a new synthetic opioid roughly ten times stronger than fentanyl. Criminal gangs in Guayaquil, Ecuador, are using the murder of women as a territorial and revenge tactic: 411 women were killed in 2025 alone.

Disasters & crime

Hurricane Polo rapidly intensified to Category 5 off Mexico's Pacific coast before easing to a still-dangerous Category 4, triggering flooding and landslide warnings in Colima and other coastal states. A rare September nor'easter is threatening coastal flooding from North Carolina to New England at the same time, and a separate flash-flood emergency hit New Mexico. Three gunmen killed at least 11 people, including a pregnant woman, at a house party near Durban, South Africa, then torched a car at the scene and fled; no suspects were confirmed.

Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 15 years for the 2006 sexual assault of Miriam Haley, who gave a victim statement in court; he still faces resentencing in a separate Los Angeles case. More than 100 riders are suing Six Flags Magic Mountain over brain injuries allegedly caused by the X2 roller coaster, closed since July; attorneys say more than 300 people have reported injuries. Texas Rangers executed search warrants for electronic records from the Eastland family, operators of Camp Mystic, where dozens of girls died in the July 2025 floods; investigators are weighing manslaughter, negligent homicide and child abandonment charges. A hacking group calling itself ShinyHunters claims it stole personal data on thousands of FBI agents and job applicants from the bureau's jobs website, saying it acted in retaliation for an FBI advisory it found offensive. Sentencing began in Canada for Kenneth Law, who sold a lethal substance linked to nearly 80 deaths in the UK, including student Tom Parfitt. A crime-scene investigator undercut pastor and former American Idol contestant Caleb Flynn's staged-break-in defense at his Ohio murder trial, testifying the forced-entry evidence did not match an actual break-in. A Mississippi grand jury found no evidence to charge anyone in the drowning death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells, whose family disputes the accidental-drowning finding. ProPublica reported the FBI investigated Sen. Susan Collins over a contracts-for-donations allegation before dropping the case when Trump returned to office.
