Daily Brief — Friday 25 September 2026
Markets

$97 a barrel is where crude touched intraday Thursday; a 5% spike on Iran headlines before it faded back to roughly $93, down 1.6% on the day. A cargo ship struck in the Strait of Hormuz killed at least one seafarer and drove the initial move; prices stay whipsawed between reports of a phased US-Iran deal to lift the naval blockade and warnings from a senior adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader that the war could spread to the Indian Ocean and Red Sea. Diesel adds its own pressure: record US prices have traders talking about an export ban, and EU diesel hit record highs on the same war.

$4,290 an ounce is where gold sits after a 1.5% weekly slide to a one-week low. Hawkish Fed rhetoric and a firm dollar beat out safe-haven demand from the Iran standoff; support sits near $4,230-$4,203, and a break below $4,333 keeps the bearish bias intact. Bitcoin extended its "Red September" pattern to $84,155, slipping under its 50-week moving average as traders price a higher-for-longer Fed path.

30 years is how far back you have to go for a Treasury yield this high. The 30-year closed at its highest level since 2004, and the 10-year pushed above 5%; the global bond selloff built on a surprise PMI beat, the worst five-year auction since 2021 and hawkish commentary from new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh following this week's 25bp hike to 3.75%-4.00%. The consumer read-through: 30-year mortgage rates at 7.26%-7.37%, the highest since Trump returned to office and well above the sub-6% rate that prevailed before the Iran war began. RSM economist Joe Brusuelas warned the Fed may need three more hikes through early next year if growth keeps accelerating; BCA's Marco Pappich countered that some of the move is a geopolitical risk premium tied to Iran, not pure growth optimism. EUR/USD sits at $1.14, near a two-month low as the dollar index extends its rally on the same hawkish bets. $11.6 billion is the size of Akamai's new cloud-infrastructure deal with Anthropic, one of the largest AI infrastructure agreements struck this year; the stock jumped sharply on the news even as broader tech sentiment wavered and sector peers slid. Equities otherwise went nowhere. The S&P 500 and Dow finished roughly flat as surging yields and oil offset gains elsewhere, while the Nasdaq eked out a marginal advance. Meta rallied 4.5% after unveiling its "Muse" AI agent and slimmer AI glasses at Connect; the app hit nearly 3 million downloads to become the top free app on Apple's store within a day, though Amazon blocked its shopping integration over security concerns. Moderna added nearly 7%.

The Big Story
Xi Jinping landed at Joint Base Andrews for his first US state visit in more than a decade, and Trump met him on the tarmac himself, reportedly the first time a sitting president has done that for a foreign leader there since the 1960s. The choreography was warm. The substance was thin. The two sides extended their tariff truce by two months, to January 10, far short of the multi-year extension Beijing wanted and shorter than the three-to-six months markets had priced in. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed the extension. Bloomberg's read was blunt: the deal "reinforces how held together with band-aids that status quo really is," and China still holds the stronger hand through its dominance of rare earths.

Nothing moved on the harder issues. Taiwan arms sales stayed unresolved, and Xi reportedly pressed Trump in unusually strong language to oppose Taiwan independence outright. AI governance went nowhere either. Trump used the summit window to reject any international scheme to regulate AI development, calling it a "globalist conspiracy" at the UN and directing the State Department to replace "artificial intelligence" with "superintelli- gence" in official US documents. China's alleged intelligence-sharing with Iran also stayed an open sore. Al Jazeera called the whole encounter a "tactical thaw," heavy on ceremony and light on concession; Sky News went further, framing Trump's uncharacteristically deferential body language toward Xi as a symbolic power shift favoring Beijing.

The optics turned toxic for an unrelated reason. A federal judge had just ordered the White House to restore press credentials for CNN, MS Now and Politico, and the administration's slow, partial compliance meant no shared network pool video existed of Xi's arrival ceremony at all; rival outlets had to rely on still photographs. Bipartisan Republican unease at the lavish state dinner, stocked with tech CEOs including Musk, Altman, Bezos, Cook and Huang, sharpened the sense that Washington was extending itself for a rival that gave little back beyond two pandas bound for Zoo Atlanta. Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the engagement on Fox News as a relationship that "will define the 21st century" and called avoiding it "irresponsible." CNN's framing cut the other way: a White House deferring to Beijing on trade while fighting its own press corps in court over access to cover it.

US Politics
A judge's order collided with a president's schedule. Federal Judge Timothy Kelly ruled Thursday that Trump's ban on CNN, MS Now and Politico from the White House likely violated the Fifth Amendment's due-process guarantee, and he ordered a 14-day restoration of access. The timing was brutal: the order landed the same morning Xi Jinping arrived, and reporters from all three outlets were turned away at the gate for hours anyway, forcing an emergency filing and a judge's demand that the Justice Department explain its noncompliance by 12:30pm. Access was eventually restored, and CNN's Betsy Klein walked back onto White House grounds to applause from colleagues. Trump called the coverage "fiction and lies" and confirmed he will appeal; Fox News quoted an outside legal analyst calling the government's national-security justification a "very uphill battle." Sky News drew the obvious contrast with Xi's visit itself: "which other superpower bans media that it doesn't like? China."

The administration's AI posture followed the same defiant logic. Trump told the UN the US would "encourage super intelligence, we will not rein it in"; he rejected coordinated global oversight as a "globalist conspiracy" and named the Justice Department the sole domestic guardrail on the technology. That stance put him directly at odds with the industry's own leaders. The same week, OpenAI's Sam Altman and Anthropic's Dario Amodei warned the UN Security Council that unchecked AI could concentrate power or slip beyond human control, and Australia's prime minister revealed an OpenAI agent had breached a government Medicare portal in June. California Governor Gavin Newsom used the gap to attack Trump for having no federal framework at all, touting his own state "kill switch" order in progress.

Republican anxiety over the midterms kept surfacing down-ballot. Fox News moved Kansas from "likely Republican" to "lean Republican," a rare shift in a state Trump carried by 16 points, after megachurch pastor Adam Hamilton drew direct attacks from the White House and Vice President Vance. New NYT/NBC polling showed similar tightening in Michigan, where Abdul El-Sayed leads Mike Rogers 49% to 44%, and in New Hampshire, where Chris Pappas leads John Sununu by five points. Steve Kornacki's read: a Republican loss in a seat like Michigan's makes the Senate math "super complicated" given Gary Peters' retirement. Separately, the Navy confirmed eight sailors and Marines on the USS Abraham Lincoln attempted suicide during its record-long, nearly 300-day deployment tied to the Iran war, contradicting months of Pentagon denials that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had dismissed as exaggerated. Trump had reportedly remarked the deployment "had not gone on nearly long enough."

World

Iran's defiance hardened even as backchannel diplomacy continued. President Pezeshkian told the UN Iran is "ready for dialogue.. without accepting the language of force," and he displayed photos of children he said were killed in US and Israeli strikes; the sole US delegate walked out of the speech. Trump countered that he could "annihilate" what remains of Iran's military without a deal, while Rubio dismissed Iran's UN rhetoric as stalling until after the midterms. Iranian FM Abbas Araghchi floated a seven-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz if US conditions are met, and Reuters reported envoys exploring a phased trade: the strait for the blockade. A cargo ship hit in the strait killed at least one seafarer this week, and a senior adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader warned the fighting could spread to the Indian Ocean and Red Sea.

Israel's diplomacy and its violence moved on parallel tracks. Netanyahu's UN address triggered a mass walkout, and he branded the departing delegates "moral cowards" while singling out New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani as a Hamas sympathizer; Mamdani called the speech an attempt "to sanitize the genocide of Palestinians." Over 100 protesters were arrested outside the UN. A day earlier, Neria Leiter, son of Israel's US ambassador and an army reservist, was critically injured when a Palestinian driver rammed a checkpoint near Beit Horon in the West Bank; soldiers shot the driver dead, and Hamas praised the attack. UN rights chief Volker Türk said more than 1,300 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces since October's ceasefire. The US-led Board of Peace unveiled a $2.4-2.5 billion, six-month Gaza reconstruction plan; full recovery is estimated at 10 years and $70 billion. Mahmoud Abbas, denied a US visa for a second year, warned by video of a "second Nakba."

Ethiopia's civil war risks reigniting. The TPLF declared what it called a "full-blown war" on the federal government, seizing Mekelle's airport and two others; seven opposition groups, including old civil-war rivals TPLF and FANO, announced a coalition aiming to overthrow PM Abiy Ahmed. Ethiopia's military claims it killed more than 270 Tigrayan fighters in a counter-offensive in Amhara. The most consequential shift: Eritrea, which fought alongside Addis Ababa against Tigray in the 2020-2022 war that killed roughly 600,000 people, has reportedly reversed course and is now arming the Tigrayan-led coalition. The EU has called for de-escalation.

Elsewhere, Zelensky told the UN that choking Russia's trade revenue is the only way to shorten the war, hours after a Russian drone strike killed at least two people in Kyiv. The US has invited Putin to December's G20 in Miami, with Rubio framing it as a chance for dialogue while stressing the war "is not going to end on the battlefield." The US, Denmark and Greenland signed a security and minerals pact expanding NATO's Arctic access while preserving Danish sovereignty, defusing Trump's earlier annexation threats, though one UK analyst flagged that China could cite it as precedent for its own Taiwan claims. A Sky/YouGov mega-poll projects a hung UK parliament, with Andy Burnham's Labour winning the most seats but well short of a majority and Reform UK collapsing from first to third in projected seats despite leading on vote share. In Nepal, the prime minister told the UN the Bhotikosi-Trishuli flash flood, which has killed over 1,400 people with 6,000 still missing, was "a warning to the world," as the country formally requested $20 million in climate reparations toward a $5 billion rebuild.

New Today
Disasters & crime
A rare September nor'easter, one of roughly 1% of such storms to form this month, brought 60-70mph gusts and coastal flooding to 17-18 million people from the Carolinas to New England. Tropical Storm Nolo threatens Hawaii's Big Island with up to 35 inches of rain and landslides, its third major storm threat of the season, as Category 5 Hurricane Polo tracks offshore of Mexico's Pacific coast with no US landfall expected. Independent blood testing found roughly 70% of 49 tested residents near a Lancashire chemicals plant carry elevated levels of the cancer-linked "forever chemical" PFOA, banned in the UK since 2020; one resident's son tested at 111.

Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 15 years plus five years of supervised release for the 2006 assault of Miriam Haley, and the judge called him "a sexual predator and the literal face of the Me Too movement." Caleb Flynn's mistress testified he texted her "tomorrow is the day, I'm going to be a free man" the night before his wife's killing; the pair exchanged roughly 100,000 messages during their affair. More than 300 people have contacted lawyers over injuries from Six Flags Magic Mountain's X2 roller coaster; two women were hospitalized with brain hemorrhages in the same week, and roughly 100 lawsuits are planned. New forensics in the Nolan Wells case show data was deleted from his phone between his death and when his parents received it; a state autopsy found unexplained blunt-force trauma despite a grand jury's no-bill finding. ICE video obtained by CNN shows a Venezuela-born DoorDash driver shot in the back after a traffic stop and pursuit in Austin; the agent remains on leave, and Texas prosecutors say DHS has withheld evidence.

Business & tech
Mark Zuckerberg's "Muse" AI agent hit nearly 3 million downloads to top Apple's App Store within a day, though reviewers flagged reliability gaps and Amazon blocked its shopping integration. Hacker group ShinyHunters claims to have stolen 2-3 terabytes of FBI personnel data and is demanding a public retraction rather than a ransom. A bipartisan Senate hearing chaired by Josh Hawley examined Flock's 120,000camera license-plate network, which generates 20 billion images a month, after a witness described being wrongly jailed for 13 days over a misidentification; the vendors invited to testify did not show. NBC's investigation tied a 21-year-old's fatal overmedication at a Connecticut hospital to $650 million previously extracted by its former private-equity owner.

Culture & sport

Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua finally signed to fight at Cardiff's Principality Stadium on December 11, ending 16 years of on-off talks; an 80,000-seat crowd is expected, and Netflix will stream the fight for US audiences. Prince Harry warned at the Clinton Global Initiative that AI companion apps pose a more intimate danger to children than social media, and he cited prior US findings against Meta and YouTube as evidence "pressure works." California and New York proclaimed September 25 Dolly Parton Day, and a Tennessee judge granted her estate a restraining order against her nephew over alleged threats to her brand.
