Daily Brief — Thursday 1 October 2026
Markets

$89 is where WTI sits after a 1.5% slip; Brent trades near $97-98. Saudi exports from Yanbu have resumed and Goldman pegs Gulf exports back at 23.3 million barrels a day; a surprise 922,000-barrel rise in US crude stocks added pressure anyway. Brent is still up roughly 14% for September; the floor under oil hasn't moved. Qatar-mediated US-Iran talks are stalled, Trump denied he'd offer sanctions relief, tanker attacks continue, Russia's diesel export ban runs on, and US distillate stocks sit near record lows. OPEC+ meets Sunday; it's expected to hold output steady.

$84,000 is bitcoin's level, up 0.5% on the day and 44% over 90 days; still 34% below its $126,080 record. ETF inflows have faded hard, from nearly $1 billion a day down to $134 million. Resistance sits at $87,397; support at $80,875.
5.62% is where the 30-year Treasury yield peaked on September 28, its highest since 2002; the 10-year sits near 5.2-5.3%. Long-bond yields have now risen for seven straight sessions, pulling money out of stocks and crypto alike. Against that, core PCE rose just 0.2% month-on-month versus 0.3% expected; CME odds of an October Fed hike fell to about 35% from 72%. Q2 GDP was revised up to 2.2% and ADP added 90,000 jobs; Friday's payrolls report is the next test. The BOJ raised rates to 1.25% in September; the ECB sits at 2.5%; the RBA is at 4.6% after hot Australian CPI of 4%. USD/MXN has pushed above 18.00 as carry appeal fades.

6,760.84 is where the S&P 500 closed Tuesday, down for the session though higher for the quarter on tech strength; the Dow fell 0.3% to 51,349.92. Oil, yields, the midterms and the Iran war are the four weights traders cite as the main worries heading into Q4.
The Big Story
The last US troops left Iraq on September 30, closing out more than two decades of military presence that began with the 2003 invasion. Baghdad declared a multi-day "sovereignty" holiday; the Pentagon formally shut down Operation Inherent Resolve. Trump called it "a great day for America" and a "decisive victory" over ISIL. Almost every network covering the story pushed back on that framing within the same broadcast. NBC's Courtney Kube said ISIS fighters and their leadership have largely relocated to Africa rather than being destroyed. Former ambassador James Jeffrey, speaking to DW, said the withdrawal "got rid of a regional threat of the first order and helped Iraq develop a nascent democracy... at the cost of giving Iran more influence." The real story: Iran-aligned militias, Kata'ib Hezbollah and Harakat al-Nujaba among them, are openly celebrating the pullout as a win for the "Axis of Resistance." Kurdish officials near Erbil, where the last US airbase sat, are warning that losing American air-defense cover could open the door to an ISIL resurgence.

The timing compounds the awkwardness. The withdrawal was agreed under Biden in 2024; it landed in the same week the Trump administration was fighting Iran elsewhere in the region. Sky and Bloomberg both flagged the juxtaposition as undercutting Trump's stated goal of curbing Tehran's influence. Sky's Michael Clarke put it bluntly: the optics let Iran-aligned proxies "proclaim this as a victory," creating "an image that President Trump has been defeated in this respect." Bloomberg's Anissa Basiri-Tabrizi pushed back that the decision predates the war entirely and "has nothing to do with the war." Both things are true; that's the tension. A withdrawal that was logistically pre-baked is now being read, rightly or wrongly, as a battlefield signal.

It lands against a backdrop that makes the signal louder. The RAF Fairford incident is still unresolved. PM Andy Burnham says there are "strong indications" Iran was involved in the plot targeting the UK base used to launch US strikes on Iran; Tehran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi flatly denies it and accuses Britain of "barking up the wrong tree." Trump has publicly criticized UK police for bailing the five arrested men; British officials called the comments unhelpful interference in an active investigation. Qatar is still shuttling a counterproposal between Washington and Tehran over reopening the Strait of Hormuz; the two sides remain far apart on sequencing. Chatham House's Anissa Basiri-Tabrizi warned the US and Iran are "moving farther apart rather than closer," with a return to hostilities plausible once the midterms pass. Crude flows through Hormuz have recovered to roughly 98% of pre-war levels; that reflects tankers absorbing risk, not the waterway becoming safe. Iraq's government calls the US exit the true birth of Iraqi sovereignty. Both readings can be correct at once; that ambiguity is the vacuum regional actors are now racing to fill.

US Politics
Trump spent the day selling a $200 billion South Korean investment package in US energy infrastructure: $54 billion for the long-stalled Alaska LNG pipeline, a 6-gigawatt Texas gas plant, and eight new nuclear plants. The announcement, five weeks before the midterms, lands squarely behind embattled Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan; Bloomberg's Kate Ackley framed it as a deliberate pre-election boost rather than a purely economic story. Trump then used the same event to attack a same-named decoy candidate in the Alaska Senate race, calling it "crooked" Democratic trickery "picked out of a hat." He offered no evidence. Fox aired the claim largely unchallenged; Democrat Mary Peltola remains Sullivan's actual challenger in a race now central to Senate control.

Energy politics and energy pain are colliding. US diesel export restrictions are under consideration to ease domestic prices ahead of November. Bloomberg's George Shaw and Sky's Marco Forgione warned a ban could backfire by raising gasoline and jet-fuel costs, and would be "truly catastrophic" for allies given Britain's thin 40-day reserve. That tension is playing out directly in swing-state races. In Texas, new polling shows Hispanic voters now favor Democrat James Talarico over Republican Ken Paxton by roughly 54-36%, a sharp reversal from 2024 that NBC ties to affordability anger and backlash against ICE raids. One voter told NBC: "we vote people, not party." In Georgia, Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms staged a gas-station campaign stop to hammer the same fuel-cost message, in a race CNN framed as a test of whether Georgia keeps tipping blue.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth used his Quantico "State of the Force" address to double a planned cut to general and admiral positions to 20%, effective January 1. He unveiled a new four-star Autonomous Warfare Command alongside Musk-linked and Palmer Luckey-linked AI-warfare initiatives. He called press coverage of the Iran war "a national betrayal... treason, actually." Senator Jack Reed warned the cuts would "disrupt command when continuity matters most" mid-war; Hakeem Jeffries said Hegseth, not Pentagon staff, should be the one "let go." The Supreme Court's conservative majority let the administration resume deporting migrants to third countries with little notice, over three liberal justices' dissent. Roughly 20,000-25,000 people have already been removed this way; the US has paid an estimated $41 million to governments including Rwanda, Eswatini and South Sudan to accept them. In Minnesota, AG Todd Blanche announced indictments of foreign nationals for illegal voting, part of a claimed 90-plus national voter-fraud prosecutions in five weeks. The DOJ simultaneously filed a judicial-misconduct complaint against nearly every federal district judge in Minnesota over their contact with the New York Times on immigration cases.

World
Iraq's exit, detailed above, is the dominant thread; three other fronts moved hard today. In the West Bank, settlers set fire to the Toubasi family's home in Jalud minutes after they returned under military escort; Israeli accounts put the attacking crowd above 100 people. Netanyahu condemned the attack and called for prosecution "to the fullest extent of the law," unusually direct language for him. He also downplayed it as the work of a "handful of rioters," a gap CNN and others highlighted directly. Opposition figure Gadi Eisenkot called it "not a malfunction and not a mistake, but a direct result of a dangerous policy." The US State Department said it "condemns criminal violence by any party in the West Bank."

In the Gulf, a FlyDubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv carrying over 150 passengers diverted to Saudi Arabia after the co-pilot allegedly stabbed the pilot and tried to crash the plane. It reportedly dropped 14,000-17,000 feet in under 30 seconds before crew and passengers subdued him. Netanyahu called it a foiled jihadist terror attack; Saudi Arabia is holding the attacker for questioning, and both pilots are hospitalized. Aviation analysts on CNN and NBC flagged the deeper worry: an in-cockpit attack by a trusted colleague, not an external hijacker. That raises new questions about psychological screening of flight crews.

Three other conflicts and transitions are worth tracking. Yemen's Houthis launched a rapid offensive that captured Red Sea coastline including the Bab al-Mandab Strait, overwhelmed Saudi-backed government forces, and displaced more than 148,000 people. UN envoy Hans Grundberg said the fighting has made both sides warier of peace talks. In Ethiopia, fighting between the federal army and a TPLF-led coalition has spread into the Amhara and Afar regions amid a communications blackout; government forces claim the town of Alamata. Ethiopia's army accuses Eritrea, Sudan and Egypt of backing the rebels; all three deny it. In Serbia, Alexander Vucic resigned the presidency to run for prime minister instead, an "all or nothing" bid ahead of the October 25 election against a two-year student protest movement that is fielding its own list for the first time.
